Summer Assignments for 3rd Graders going into 4th Grade

Dear Parents,

Listed below are the summer reading and math assignments for the students entering the fourth grade in September 2016.  Please encourage your child to plan out his/her assignments, so that adequate study/work time is spent in each area.

English:

Please choose 2 of the following books:

a) The Birchbark House by Louise Erdrich
b) Fourth Grade Rats by Jerry Spinelli
c) Jake and Lily by Jerry Spinelli

Assignment #1
Read each book.  For each book, write chapter notes for each chapter read.  Record important facts and details as you read.  Keep loose-leaf paper in book.  *Write the name of book on top of the first page, and chapter number for each section when writing your notes.

Assignment #2
Choose one of the two books read, and write an alternative ending to it.  It must either by 1 page typed, double-spaced, or neatly written and double-spaced, as well.  Please edit your work and be sure to include a topic sentence/opening paragraph, well-developed paragraphs with details, and a concluding paragraph that summarizes your writing.

Assignment #3
Choose one character from any of the two books that you feel you related to the most.  In paragraph form, answer the following questions:

a) What character did you relate to the most and why?  (Make sure to write the book title and author).  *Include details/examples from the book to support your writing.
b) If you could change two thigs about the character, what would they be and why?  Explain.
c) Choose one situation in the book that your character was involved in.  Explain what the situation was and how you would have handled it differently.  Cite evidence from the book when writing your response.

* Tip:  If you take solid notes, your writing will flow quite beautifully!
* Complete the ELA packet -- highlight/underline key facts/details as you read!

Math:

1. Complete the entire Math packet and show all and any work.
2. Review your multiplication facts through 12.
3. Review any concepts/topics you struggled with this year in third grade.

Thank you!
